Baldock Town 3 Letchworth GC Eagles 1
This new fixture has been introduced as a curtain raiser to the new season with league winners 2011/12 Baldock playing Aubrey Cup Winners Letchworth Eagles at the County ground, all proceeds to be given to the Garden House Hospice, the choice of both teams.
It was a warm afternoon and the players threw themselves into the game with great enthusiasm as the local rivals each tried to get bragging rights for the new season. Baldock were first to settle but did not threaten the Eagles goal until after about 20 minutes Jack Harman made space for himself and let fly from fully 25 yards. The ball rocketed into the top corner with goalie Dan Goade given no chance. Baldock tried to build on the lead but squandered several good chanced by over hasty finishing, blasting 2 chances high and wide and Dan Goade making a couple of good saves..
Eagles were struggling with a new look line up but 5 minutes before half time Stuart King, on loan from Hitchin, latched on to a through ball from Ben L’Honore, outpaced chasing defenders and coolly slotted the ball past Nick Stilwell in goal.
1-1 at half time and all to play for, but Baldock took the early initiative and scored soon after the break catching Eagles defence square with a good flowing move. The game then settled into a pattern with neither side getting on top before a Baldock player was felled in the corner of the penalty area as he dribbled through with the ball. A clear penalty and cleanly dispatched by Baldock captain Anthony Bowskill.
Eagles then enjoyed a period of good attacking play without really testing the Baldock goal until Ben L’Honore, who was eagles star performer by far, struck the crossbar with a thundering free kick from 30 yards out in the middle of the park. Baldock somehow managed to scramble the rebound away but the chance was gone. Dan Goade had kept the eagles in to game with at least 2 excellent blocking saves but the eagles were unable to penetrate a sound Baldock defence, finally losing 3-1.
