“ Luke Shimell hat trick sinks Chipperfield”
After a hesitant start against a physical visiting side Eagles eventually ran out easy 4-0 winners thanks to a debut hat trick of goals by youngster Luke Shimell, his first in senior football after making the transition from youth football last season.
For the first half hour neither side really created a clear goal scoring opportunity, with Eagles passing game failing to overcome the visitors long ball tactics. Jamie Platt almost connected with a header a few yards out from a cross by Carl Williams but the keeper managed to fist clear and after 20 minutes Scott Gilzean broke clear of a pack of chasing defenders but his shot was blocked by the keeper and Williams shot just over the bar from the rebound.
Eagles eventually scored after 27 minutes following a corner which was volleyed by Shane Carthy into the ground but over the heads of the keeper and covering defenders.. He almost scored again on 40 minutes when he headed a cross from Williams into the arms of the keeper.
Chipperfield should have equalised a few minutes later when a cross from the right was headed just wide when Eagles failed to get in a decent challenge and left the player unmarked. Platt then broke away on the left and in a slick passing move the ball was quickly passed to Williams who crossed the ball on to the head of Luke Shimell who scored easily from the edge of the goal area.
After half time eagles stepped up the pace against tiring opponents. The young Chipperfield keeper made a decent save from a Platt shot from inside the area on 55 minutes and then made a superb save from Gilzean , before the ball ran loose to Shimell who hammered it into the net from near the penalty spot. He scored again on 60 minutes to make it 4-0 from a cross by Gilzean .Williams then almost turned goalscorer when put clear of the Chipperfield defence but he shot straight at the advancing keeper from the penalty spot when he should have hit the target.
Eagles then eased off the pressure and almost paid the penalty when a sloppy pass by Sam Williams in his own half was intercepted , but the lucky visitor failed to make the most of the opportunity after a strong challenge by Ricky Small and Dan Goad was able to make a good blocking save to clear the danger.. Platt then broke clear in a fast break out of defence but shot inches wide of the far post when clear on goal.
In the last few minutes Goad almost gifted a clear goal scoring chance to the visitors when he parried a cross into the path of an onrushing Chipperfield player, but covering Eagles defenders managed to block the ball and get it clear of danger.
A very entertaining game finally finished 4-0 with no further goals after the first hour despite both sides having created chances to score.
