ANAGRAM RECORDS TROPHY 1ST ROUND
Eagles started the defence of the trophy they won last season with an emphatic victory over fellow Herts Senior County League side Sarratt, after a sluggish first half performance.
Eagles nearly went behind in the first 5 minutes when a long ball down the middle caught out retreating defenders and keeper Goad had to make a desperate block with his feet before a defender blocked a goal bound shot from the rebound. George Sarafoudis had a clear sight of goal but although his shot from 10 yards beat the Sarratt keeper it failed to carry enough pace and was cleared by a covering defender.
Eagles were menacing down the flanks with Dami Fajobi causing constant problems with his pace, but despite plenty of crosses into the penalty area no clear goal scoring chances were created by the Eagles in the first 15 minutes. Lee Pateman then shot straight at the keeper when well placed and then just over the visitors’ crossbar from the edge of the penalty area. Sarratt tried to counter attack but had few shots on goal or on target .
Eagles eventually got their noses in front after 35 minutes with a fortunate goal. A wild clearance by a defender hit Fajobi and the ball cannoned into the back of the net. On the stroke of half time it was 2-0 when Eagles defender Joe Humphries headed in a corner from Shane Carthy from near the penalty spot for his first goal for the club.
Eagles were on the offensive soon after the break and a strong run by Fajobi down the centre almost produced another goal but his shot was too high. There was then a scramble in the Sarratt penalty area after shots by Carthy and Fajobi were charged down before the ball was cleared from danger.
Eagles had a scare after an hour when Jamie Farrar had to clear the ball with Keeper Goad beaten and then Paul McGennity headed out from under the eagles crossbar and off the eagles goal line with Goad helpless. However on 70 minutes eagles made it 3-0 with a goal from Fajobi. The floodgates then opened as Sarratt tired and 3 substitutions injected new life into the Eagles attack. First Josh Coley chased a ball down the middle outpacing defenders and scoring easily with a low shot into the corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area, then Carthy made it 5 with another low shot into the corner of the net. Almost on time Coley was cynically fouled in the penalty area by the Sarratt no 5, who was given a red card before Fajobi banged home the penalty for his hat trick of goals.
