HERTS SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE PREM DIVISION
Despite their customary bad start Eagles deservedlyovercame a physical Chipperfield side in a game with end to end football and missed chances by both teams.
Just before 10 minutes Eagles looked likely to score first when James Endacott was put clear on goal, but his shot was parried by the keeper and Scott Piggott sent the loose ball skimming off the top of the home crossbar from just inside the penalty area.. Eagles came to rue the miss because after 15 minutes they went behind when a ball fell between 2 defenders, was not cleared, and then was shot home from the edge of the goal area into the Eagles net.
Eagles responded and after a quick break out of defence Endacott again had a clear shot on goal, but his low shot hit a defender. It looked a goal but the keeper made a reaction save to push the ball wide.
Chipperfield relied on long balls out of defence and Eagles were nearly caught cold by a chase downfield with Eagles defenders stranded near the half way line. Eagles keeper Paul McGennity had to dash well outside his area to clear the ball with his foot, and the ball cannoned back towards the Eagles goal before Sam Nicholls managed to steer it away from danger.
Play swung from end to end. Milo Keane fed the ball to Endacott but he blasted the ball high and wide of goal. The Chipperfield keeper had to be alert to drop on a deflected shot and then McGennity had to palm a cross cum shot just round his far post. Soon after the Chipperfield no 9 had a great chance to score when left unmarked in the Eagles penalty area, but blasted his shot high and wide. Another good chance was wasted when Eagles failed to tightly mark at a corner and the free header sailed wide of goal.
Piggott collided with the home keeper in a chase for a long ball, which ran to Endacott, who was unable to lob the ball into an empty net from 20 yards out and scuffed his shot well wide. Howerver, a goal was coming and just before half time Joe Tyler side footed a low cross from Nicholls into the net. Carl Williams shot from near the edge of the penalty area looked to be heading into the net before it was deflected over the cross bar by a defender.
After half time more chances were missed by both sides. Keane passed the ball into the Chipperfield net from close range at the far post, but was ruled offside, and then sub River Amis Robinson conjured up a moment of magic with a wonderful curling shot into the top corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area.
Eagles delight did not last long and the defence was caught out of position after a break down the right flank as the low cross was side footed into the net from close to the penalty spot. The game was looking to be heading for a draw but in the last minutes of normal time there was drama as Ray Antcliff dribbled into the Chipperfield penalty area, and as had happened on numerous occasions earlier, was brought crashing to the ground. Piggott clinically dispatched the penalty, and Eagles saw out the 10 minutes of added time after Chipperfield went down to 10 men following dissent and the sin bin punishment.
