HERTS SENIOR CENTENARY TROPHY
Eagles came to rue missed chances in the first half as they were beaten by two second half goals on a rain sodden pitch.
Eagles started brightly and after 15 minutes nearly went ahead when a shot was charged down near the visitors’ goal line by a defender at the near post. Swifts looked dangerous on the break and almost on the half hour should have gone ahead with a break down the centre and 2 forwards facing a single defender, but the poor low cross was straight to the defender near the penalty spot. Shortly after Eagles keeper Paul Mc Gennity had to make a great save with his feet to keep the ball out .
Joe Tyler finally made the breakthrough on the half hour when he shot low into the bottom corner of the net across the keeper from inside the penalty area after an earlier shot was parried. The keeper then made an excellent save from Sam Nicholls and the ball was somehow scrambled out of danger. Jamie Farrar should have scored from close range but again the keeper managed to keep the ball out of goal. Eagles piled on the pressure before half time. Scott Pigott blazed over the cross bar from the edge of the penalty area and the Swift’s keeper was in constant action.
Soon after the break McGennity had to make an excellent save with his feet as the ball went from end to end. Milo Keane floated a cross cum shot from close to the goal line over the keeper and just failing to fall inside the far post. Against the run of play Swifts suddenly equalised with a quick move down the left flank and shot low across McGennity in the far corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area. Sub Jamie Platt then hit the top of the cross bar from 12 yards and Joe Tyler missed a golden chance heading a direct free kick from Carl Williams wide of an open goal.
Swifts counter attacked and again found space on the left. McGennity raced out of his goal to try and clear the long ball but was beaten to it by a Swifts forward who skilfully lobbed the ball high over his head from outside the penalty area into an empty net. Another attack left Eagles defence badly exposed but luckily the ball was blazed wide of a post from the edge of the penalty area. McGennity then had to make a good save from a shot clear on goal, before beating out the rebound. Eagles tried to respond and a powerful header from Jake Tyler from 6 yards went straight at the keeper in the dying minutes, but in the end they were beaten despite being the better side for much of the game.
