MATCH REPORT TUESDAY16 SEPTEMBER 2025
SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1
LETCHWORTH G C EAGLES 0 BELSTONE 0
Both sides had chances to win this hard fought and entertaining game, but with George Coomes in the Eagles goal the busiest keeper a point seemed a fair result for the home team.
Belstone made a flying start and after 5 minutes a low shot from inside the penalty area was screwed just wide of Eagles goal. A minute later a Belstone free kick then went close. Play switched from end to end with first Belstone then the Eagles having goal bound shots deflected wide of goal by a covering defender.
Eagles got closest to scoring after 35 minutes when a low shot from the edge of the Belstone penalty area went just wide of the far post, but the first half ended goalless with the Belstone keeper not tested.
Eagles made a good start to the second half and within 10 minutes Rory Gillham hooked the ball just wide of goal from the edge of the Belstone penalty area. After another rapid counter attack a few minutes later he was unable to turn the ball into the net at the far post. His third attempt within a few minutes was straight at the keeper.
At the other end mid way into the second half Coomes had to make a blocking save to beat away a shot from just inside Eagles penalty area and 5 minutes later he saved a low shot with his feet as Belstone increased the pressure on Eagles defence, particularly with raids down the right wing. A corner to Belstone to the far post was headed back into the goal area but the goal strike was straight at Coomes, who was increasingly called into action. He had to throw himself at full stretch to palm away another cross from the right touchline and a corner was then headed wide of Eagles goal.
As the game reached its final stages Eagles had a great chance to score from a rapid counter attack. Gabe Ryan had a clear run on goal down the centre but his low shot from the edge of the penalty area beat the keeper but came back into play off the foot of the goal post. In the last minutes of added time Olly Humphreyes blasted a shot high over the Belstone goal and a direct free kick to Belstone went just over Eagles cross bar.
