MATCH REPORT SAT 6 DECEMBER 2025
SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1
LEIGHTON TOWN RES 2 LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 0
Eagles poor finishing cost them the game against poor opposition, below them in the league table. The home keeper did not have to make a decent save with most attempts going wide of goal or straight at the keeper.
Eagles had the better of the first half in terms of attempts on goal After 17 minutes after a fast move down the right side a low cross was sliced wide of goal by a covering Leighton defender. The resulting corner was not cleared, and the ball reached the edge of the penalty area before being sent high and wide of goal.
Leighton had their moments and after 28minutes posed a threat to Eagles goal after a long punt upfield was collected by a Leighton forward who crossed low into Eagles penalty area. Fortunately, the final shot was well wide of goal.
After 33 minutes Eagles looked likely to score when a corner to the near close was not cleanly headed clear by the defence and after a scramble in the goal area the ball was finally hooked clear from near the goal line. The ball fell to Eagles but the shot was ballooned high over the crossbar. A few minutes later the home keeper had to punch clear a free kick at full stretch. Just before half time Eagles had shots blocked by defenders whose goal seemed to bear a charmed life.
Not long into the second half Eagles went behind after a shot from just outside the penalty area flew into the top of the net giving keeper George Coomes no chance of saving. 10 minutes later he had to be alert to palm clear a goal bound shot from 18yards.Eagles continued to ride their luck when on the hour mark a Leighton forward ran from the halfway line into Eagles penalty area chased by defenders, before aiming a low shot towards the far corner of the net. The ball hit the foot of the post and was scrambled clear for a corner. Relief was short lived for Eagles. The ball was played low from the corner to a forward waiting on the edge of the penalty area. His low shot through a crowd of players squirmed under Coomes body and rolled into the net.
Eagles applied more pressure on goal in the final stages of the game, but the finishing was poor. After they gained possession from a misplaced pass near the edge of the Leighton penalty area a shot on goal went well wide, followed by another effort from outside the area which was straight at the home keeper. A corner was then headed straight at the home keeper standing on his goal line. Shots by both sides went high and wide of goal and as full time approached the Leighton keeper made a comfortable save at his near post, before holding another shot made straight to him.
