MATCH REPORT TUESDAY 25 AUGUST 2026
SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1
LEIGHTON TOWN RES 1 LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 2
Eagles dominated much of the game but had to snatch victory with the last action of the match
Eagles threatened the Leighton goal as early as the 9th minute when a free kick from the edge of the centre circle was headed towards goal forcing the Leighton keeper to parry the ball at his near post before it was hacked clear by a defender. A minute later a poor clearance by the home keeper was intercepted inside the Leighton half and a shot from the edge of the penalty area just cleared the cross bar.
The goal Eagles had threatened then came after 17 minutes when a fierce shot by Lawrence Burton from the edge of the penalty area found the corner of the net. Eagles continued to attack and after 28 minutes a free kick from a central position just over 20 yards from goal was sent over the Leighton cross bar.
Just before half time Leighton had a chance to pull a goal back when a forward raced into the Eagles penalty area and forced a blocking save by Jordan Hudson. He was called into action again early in the second half when a shot cum cross was met at the far post and he had to make a great blocking save.
At the other end 5 minutes later, Eagles gained possession inside the Leighton half and raced clear on goal, but the shot was delayed allowing the Leighton keeper to block the ball before it was booted clear of the goal line by a covering defender. Soon after a low shot from a tight angle inside the Leighton penalty area was sent inches wide of the far post. 2 minutes later Leighton almost got an equalising goal when a shot from the edge of the penalty area hit the Eagles cross bar and came back into play before being cleared upfield.
The last couple of minutes before the end of the game were then packed with drama. First Leighton scored when a cross from the goal line was headed into the far corner of the net from near the edge of the goal area. Eagles raced down the other end from the kick off and a cross into the penalty area was headed firmly into the net from near the penalty spot by Rory Gillham.
