Wellingborough Whitworth

MATCH REPORT SATURDAY 20 DECEMBER 2025

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1

LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 2 WELLINGBOROUGH WHITWORTH 2

The visitors dominated the early stages of the game but then Eagles started to pressure the Wellingborough defence and missed several excellent chances to score before half time.

Wellingborough threatened in the opening minutes of the game when a long throw into the Eagles goal area led to a goalmouth scramble, before a shot from around 25 yards just cleared the crossbar. At the other end a low shot from the edge of the Wellingborough penalty area was deflected just wide of goal by a defender

A few minutes later a corner was blasted high over Eagles crossbar from a few yards out after keeper George Coomes flapped at the ball, but it was Eagles that went ahead at the half hour mark with another keeper error. Eagles chased a long ball down into the Wellingborough half. The keeper advanced a long way out of goal to intercept the ball but only passed the ball to Redha Zekri, who cooly lobbed the ball a full 30 yards into the unguarded net.

A couple of minutes later the visitors had a great chance to equalise. There was a break down the centre of the Eagles half with defenders caught out of position but the shot from inside the penalty area was high and wide of goal. Eagles also missed a good goal chance sending a shot from inside the penalty area over the crossbar.

Eagles piled on the pressure and looked likely to score with several goal bound shots blocked by defenders before the ball was finally cleared up field. In another counterattack a low shot from inside the penalty area was held by the Wellingborough keeper at the foot of his near post.

Eagles then had a narrow escape just before half time when a long throw into their penalty area was headed towards goal and bounced off the crossbar and back into play. Just before the half time whistle Eagles should have scored when a low cross found an unmarked forward, but his hasty shot was pulled wide of goal from near the penalty spot.

Soon after half time the scores were level. Eagles defence failed to close down an attack and a low cross from near the goal line into the goal area was turned into the net from close in.  Coomes then held a shot from the edge of the penalty area, and a Wellingborough corner was headed just over the goal from the edge of the goal area. 5 minutes later Wellingborough got their second goal. A free kick was floated deep into Eagles penalty area. Coomes was unable to gather the ball cleanly and it dropped perfectly for a forward to plant the ball into an empty net.

Eagles then missed a great chance to equalise. A low cross was delivered into the Wellingborough penalty area, but no Eagles forward was able to make contact to put the ball into the gaping net. As the game entered its final stage Eagles did get a second goal when a high cross into the Wellingborough goal area was headed into the net by Jack Heaton. Almost before the final whistle blew Wellingborough then had a final chance to gain all three points, but Coomes made a blocking save from a close range shot following a scramble in Eagles goal area.
