The visitors matched promotion chasing Ampthill in midfield for much of the game but created few chances to score, and defensive weakness meant that Eagles returned home defeated.

Both sides in the early stages had efforts wide of goal before Eagles keeper Adam Seymour had to make a  fine fingertip save after 8 minutes to push wide a goal bound header after Eagles defence failed to deal with a cross from the left touchline .A few minutes later Eagles did go behind when  Danny Charles made a sloppy pass in mid field which was intercepted by an Ampthill forward. He raced down the length of the Eagles half into the penalty area before slotting the ball wide of Seymour and into the far corner of the net.

After 26 minutes it was 2-0 when a fierce shot from outside the penalty area took a wicked deflection and flew into the top corner of the net. It was nearly 3-0 after 33 minutes. Seymour dashed out of his goal to try and reach a long ball, but he misjudged the challenge allowing a forward to take the ball past him. Covering defence forced the Ampthill player wide of goal towards the corner flag and the danger was averted.

Just before half time a shot from outside the penalty area was straight at Seymour, who only gained possession at the second attempt. Then came another escape for the Eagles goal when an Ampthill forward was clear on goal. The ball rebounded to his feet off a defender, but his final shot was high and wide of goal. Eagles defended desperately in the final minutes before half time. A shot was straight at Seymour soon followed another from inside the penalty area which hit the crossbar and rebounded into play. Somehow Eagles goal survived.

The second half started with a low shot by Rod Agyeman-Duah which was straight at the Ampthill keeper. An Ampthill corner was then headed clear from just under Eagles crossbar before a long-range shot forced the home keeper to palm the ball clear for a corner.

Ampthill had a succession of corners, and a high cross was headed just wide of Eagles goal as Ampthill turned on the pressure. Eagles tried to counterattack but sent shots from outside the penalty area high and wide. Seymour had to make a great save to a low shot from inside the penalty area, but towards the end of the game Ampthill scored the decisive third goal. Eagles defence was caught holding a high line and an Ampthill forward ran clear on goal. A defender blocked the first shot but the ball fell to another unmarked Ampthill player who walked the ball past Seymour and passed it into an empty net.

Both sides had shots from distance which went wide of goal before in the final minute an Ampthill  forward  ran down the centre of the field from halfway, outpacing defenders but then wildly shooting high and wide of goal.
