MATCH REPORT TUESDAY 17 MARCH 2026

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV

LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 0 EVERETT ROVERS 4

Eagles were soundly beaten by the league leaders who were a far stronger side physically. Eagles defence did well first half but the visitors dominated the second half, although 2 goals very late in the game made it a harsh final scoreline.

Eagles were first to threaten a goal after 21 minutes when a Will Blair free kick from the right touchline into the Everett penalty area was headed wide of goal. At the other end a minute later a goal bound shot was blocked by a wall of Eagles defenders. Eagles then forced the Everett keeper to make a good save to deflect the ball at his near post for a corner after another Blair free kick was floated into the Everett penalty area.

Eagles seemed to be holding their own but went behind on the half hour when a long throw into Eagles penalty area was headed on and fell to a forward standing near the penalty spot who  fired the ball low into the Eagles net. There was not much more goal action until half time as both sides tried unsuccessfully to create goal chances, but a looping shot from outside the Everett penalty area dropped just over the cross bar.

Not long after half time an Everett goal was ruled out for offside but 3 minutes later Everett got the crucial second goal. A high cross into Eagles penalty area from the right touchline was laid off to another Everett forward who rifled the ball low into the corner of Eagles net.

Everett then started to dominate play with Eagles relying of breaking quickly out of defence and playing long balls upfield. A shot from the edge of Eagles penalty area went wide of goal and another shot from a similar position was straight at Coomes. At the other end a long ball out of defence down the centre of the field was chased towards goal but the keeper dashed out of goal to gather the ball  near the edge of his area. Coomes then injured himself trying to stop a deflected shot from resulting in a corner, but he managed to continue after lengthy treatment.

Everett continued to attack Eagles goal and a shot from 20 yards fizzed just wide of goal. Coomes made a good save  to parry a fierce shot from  inside the Eagles penalty area as Eagles struggled to test the visiting keeper, and one decent chance created by Rod Agyeman-Duah saw a final shot from just outside the Everett penalty area go straight at the keeper.

Eagles seemed to be holding their own but in the final minutes of added time they conceded 2 quick goals. For the first an Everett forward rode several weak challenges and shot low into the corner of the net from outside the penalty area. A minute later to complete Eagles misery Everett scored a fourth goal as Eagles defence lost concentration, with another low shot into the corner of the net and Coomes appearing wrong footed.
