MATCH REPORT SAT 14 MARCH 2026
SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1
ROTHWELL CORINTHIANS 1 LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 4
After surviving a difficult first 20 minutes and conceding an early goal Eagles overcame Rothwell with a strong performance and ran out comfortable winners over a side a place below them in the league table.
Rothwell first threatened the Eagles goal after 12 minutes when a high cross into the penalty area was well brought down by a Rothwell forward. His low shot from the edge of the penalty area was well saved by George Coomes. A minute later a long throw into Eagles penalty area caused a scramble for the ball in a group of players before it came out to the edge of the penalty area and Coomes had to push away at full stretch a low shot at the foot of the post.
Relief was short lived when Rothwell scored the opening goal after 17 minutes after gaining possession inside Eagles half. A high cross into the penalty area was headed into the net at the far post. But within 4 minutes Eagles were level. The Rothwell defence failed to clear a high cross and the ball fell to Rod Agyeman- Duah on the edge of the goal area, who directed his low shot into the corner of the Rothwell net. He continued to cause the Rothwell defence real problems and after 29 minutes he made a great run down the right side, cut into the penalty area and delivered a low cross into the goal area. A close-range shot was heading for the net until the ball was cleared off the goal line by a covering defender. After 36 minutes a long ball downfield from deep inside Eagles half was picked up by Agyeman-Duah whose low shot from the edge of the penalty area went just wide of goal.
As half time approached Rothwell gained a free kick near the corner flag and as the ball was floated into a group of players standing in the Eagles penalty area Coomes had to block a shot with his feet near the foot of the post. Almost on the stroke of half time Eagles went ahead when a cross into the Rothwell penalty area was headed back across goal and bundled into the net by Ayub Yaseen at the far post
There was much less goal action second half but Eagles scored again mid-way inside the half when a Rothwell defender tried to pass the ball across the edge of his penalty area to his keeper. It was intercepted by Yaseen who rolled the ball into an empty net. Five minutes later Eagles were awarded a penalty for a shirt pull on Charlie Austin, and Max Smith smashed the ball into the top corner of the net to complete the goal action.
