MATCH REPORT SATURDAY 2 AUGUST 2025
SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1
Eagles suffered their largest defeat for many seasons with a dreadful performance against a team that dominated the match. Defensive mistakes were repeatedly made and a lack of discipline led to 2 red cards. Manager Mark Nunn was also red carded late in the game.
Eagles almost went behind after 5 minutes when a long throw into Eagles penalty area was only partially cleared before being lobbed back towards the far post and a waiting forward. His stretching header lacked power and was easily gathered by keeper Kian McAdam. Cranfield did go ahead after 16 minutes with a long ball over the top of the Eagles defence, leaving an unmarked forward clear on goal, and he found the net with a low shot into the corner of the net.
Eagles were not making much headway in reply, but the home keeper was called into action after 21 minutes when he saved a header from a cross on the left side of the field. A minute later Eagles had a real escape when a long ball downfield was played back by a defender and miskicked by the keeper. The Cranfield forward had a clear sight of an empty goal, but his shot was blocked by a covering defender before the rebound was deflected for a corner.
Cranfield missed another good chance after 38 minutes when a low shot was held by the Eagles keeper at the foot of his post, but after 41 minutes it was 2-0 when a Cranfield forward chased a long ball down the centre of the field, outpaced defenders and put the ball into the net from the edge of the goal area. This was followed minutes after by another goal for Cranfield with a low shot into the corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area, again a result of poor marking by the Eagles defence.
Eagles were lucky not to concede again soon after half time when a poor pass out of the penalty area by McAdam was picked up by a Cranfield forward. McAdam managed to get a hand to his shot from the edge of the penalty area and deflect the ball for a corner. The corner then sailed over his flapping hand to the far post, but Cranfield were unable to turn this advantage into another goal.
After 54 minutes a break by Cranfield down the right side resulted in a low shot on goal, but fortunately straight at McAdam. On the hour Eagles were not so lucky and conceded a fourth goal when a high cross from the left touchline was crashed into the net from the edge of the goal area.
After 61 minutes Eagles went down to 10 men when Max Frost was penalised for pulling back an opponent and denying a goal scoring opportunity. Soon after Cranfield forced McAdam into action to twice block close range shots after a free kick into the penalty area was not cleared.
Eagles threatened the Cranfield goal sporadically without forcing the keeper into action with the odd shot going wide of goal. McAdam then took a short goal kick to a defender who passed the ball straight to a Cranfield forward just outside the Eagles penalty area, but he was unable to weave his way through covering defenders.
As the game headed into added time Eagles conceded 2 more goals. Firstly, a cross from the left touchline was headed into the net at the far post with the keeper no where near, and then with almost the final kick of the game McAdam conceded a penalty. This was tucked away low into the corner of the net after he was sent off for using foul and abusive language.
