MATCH REPORT SAT 16 AUGUST 2025
SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1
EATON SOCON 1 LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 0
Eagles poor run of results continued as they failed to beat the home keeper and went down to a single goal defeat.
They nearly went behind in the first 5 minutes when a high cross from the right touchline was dropped by keeper Sonny May, before the ball was hacked clear after a scramble in the goal area. At the other end Eagles missed a great chance themselves when a low cross into the penalty area found an Eagles player almost unmarked in a central position but the shot from near the penalty spot was ballooned over the cross bar.
After 12 minutes Eagles had a great escape when Eaton Socon hit the underside of the cross bar before the ball bounced back into play and a header from the rebound was caught by May under the cross bar on his goal line.
Eagles continued to create chances and a cross from the right side found Rod Agyeman-Duah inside the home penalty area, but his poor first touch allowed the ball to run to the keeper. After 35 minutes a cross from the right side was diverted by a defender towards Eagles goal and May had to tip the ball over the cross bar. A few minutes later he then comfortably held a low shot from inside the penalty area following a direct free kick to Eaton Socon. At the other end in added time to the first half Eagles gained a free kick 25 yards from goal which took a deflection off the defensive wall and forced the keeper to push the ball over his cross bar as he was challenged by Eagles forwards.
The second half began much as the first half finished with neither keeper called into serious action until on the hour mark when May saved a low direct fee kick from 20 yards at the foot of his post. Minutes later another direct free kick to Eaton Socon, this time from mid way inside the Eagles half, was directed straight at May.
Eagles defence was under pressure and failed to properly clear a corner, and after the ball was fed to an Eaton forward near the penalty spot he lashed the ball towards goal and forced an excellent save by May, who threw himself across goal to push the ball away.
After 65 minutes Theo Nobbs was red carded for fouling an opponent with a clear run on goal, and Eagles luck finally ran out after 75 minutes when a cross from the right side to the far post on the edge of Eagles goal area was headed unchallenged firmly into the far corner of the net.
A few minutes later another cross into Eagles penalty area was sent well over the cross bar. As the game drew to a close a direct free kick to Eaton Socon from 20 yards out was sent just over Eagles cross bar, and at the other end a shot from the edge of the penalty area went high above the goal. May was then called into action for the last time saving a low shot from inside the penalty area at the foot of his post.
