Eagles nearly pulled off a fine win over the unbeaten league leaders despite having Olly Humphreys sent off half way through the game for a foul tackle that looked as if it barely merited a yellow card.
They started strongly and almost scored after barely 11 minutes when a long ball downfield from well inside the Eales half was chased down the centre towards the home goal but the keeper raced towards the edge of his penalty area and made a great one handed save to push the ball clear before it could be cleared by a defender. Eagles then had a free kick from the half way line which was floated into the Ampthill penalty area and was badly misjudged by the keeper. He flapped at the ball which passed just wide of goal.
Eagles were not to be denied and went ahead after 15 minutes when a cross from near the touchline into the Ampthill goal area was headed into the far corner of the net by Rory Gillham. Within a couple of minutes Ampthill equalised with a shot from the edge of the penalty area into the top corner of the net.
Eagles struck back and after 25 minutes scored again with a contender for goal of the season by Humphreys who hit a screamer of a shot from 20 Yards into the top corner of the net. The rest of the half passed without either keeper being seriously tested but early in the second half Letchworth could have gone further ahead when a long clearance upfield by Jordan Hudson was chased down the centre of the field and into the penalty area, but the final low shot was pulled wide of goal.
Eagles looked assured and gave little away to their opponents as the second half progressed but in the final minutes of the game a hopeful clearance by Ampthill was headed into the path of an advancing forward with a clear run on goal, whose low shot went into the bottom corner of the net. A couple of minutes later play swung to the other end but a shot from the edge of the penalty area passed comfortably over the Ampthill cross bar.
