Crawley Green

MATCH REPORT TUESDAY 6 OCTOBER 2026

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1

CRAWLEY GREEN 4 LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 2

Eagles never recovered from a disastrous start against a team at the foot of the league table that had not won for 16 games.

Crawley Green scored after only 4 minutes when a low cross inside Eagles penalty area was clumsily cleared by a defender, the ball going to a Crawley Green forward standing on the edge of the penalty area, who sent a shot into the top corner of the net. It was followed by a second goal a couple of minutes later. A long ball down field was chased by a Crawley Green forward who outpaced a lone defender and scored with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area.

After 23 minutes Eagles narrowed the goal difference when Max Smith was put clear on goal and sent a low shot into the bottom corner of the net from just inside the area. Eagles continued to attack the home goal and a few minutes later a low shot was sent just wide of goal before the keeper had to make an excellent save to push clear a header from the edge of the goal area.

At the other end on the half hour a Crawley Green forward broke clear of Eagles defence but his shot from the edge of the penalty area was straight at Jordan Hudson. Eagles immediately counter attacked and a low cross from the goal line across the goal area was deflected into the net by a Crawley Green defender to make the score all square by half time.

Early in the second half Eagles nearly conceded a third goal when Crawley Green gained possession midway inside the Letchworth half and a forward went clear on goal. His low shot was well saved by the feet of the Eagles keeper.

Eagles wasted a free kick just outside the home penalty area by sending it low into the defensive wall and a low cross from the goal line flashed across the Crawly goal area with no Eagles forward in a position to apply the finishing touch.

Play swung from end to end, and Crawley Green went ahead after another Eagles defensive error. A low angled shot from inside the penalty area caught Hudson wrong footed and out of position allowing the ball to find the far bottom corner of the net. A minute later they could have scored again when a long punt upfield by the keeper was collected by a forward who sent an angled shot just past the top corner of the Eagles goal. This was repeated a few minutes later.

Eagles counter attacked as play moved from end to end. A cross to the far post was headed well wide of a gaping goal and a shot from inside the penalty area was pulled just wide of the home goal. But it was Crawley Green who sealed the match result in the final minutes of the game following another Eagles error. Hudson passed the ball to a surprised defender standing just outside the penalty area. He lost the ball to a pressing forward who sent his shot high into the top corner of the net to complete a dismal evening for the visitors.
