MATCH REPORT SAT 9 AUGUST 2025
SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1
LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 0 DESBOROUGH TOWN 3
Eagles capped another poor performance with a comfortable victory for the visitors, helped by poor goalkeeper errors at corners and poor defending.
Shortly after the start of the game Desborough went on the offensive, and an inswinging corner was headed just wide of Eagles goal. Relief was short lived because a few minutes later another inswinging corner passed over the flapping hand of keeper Sonny May into the far corner of the net. Eagles nearly went further behind a minute later with a miss placed pass inside Eagles half found a Desborough forward whose low shot from inside the Eagles penalty area was blocked by a combination of a covering defender and the keeper.
May then made a hash of clearing the ball upfield under the challenge of a Desborough forward, but after the ball was fed into Eagles penalty area the final shot was blocked by a defender and finally grasped by May.
Desborough had another chance after 18 minutes with a low struck corner which was picked up on the edge of the penalty area, but the shot was straight at May. As half time neared a free kick just outside the Eagles penalty area in a central position was sent a foot over the cross bar. Eagles seldom threatened the Desborough goal but after 42 minutes a shot from well outside the penalty area passed comfortably wide of goal.
On the hour mark Eagles did create a chance to score when Desborough failed to clear their lines and a scramble developed in their goal area before the ball was eventually hooked just wide of goal from inside the goal area. Desborough continued to pose a threat and May easily caught a low shot from outside the penalty area Minutes later at the other end Eagles made a quick break down the left side of the field finishing with a low shot from inside the penalty area that was held by the visiting keeper at his near post.
A shot from the edge of the penalty area was then well saved by May before being cleared by a defender but a second goal was conceded after 79 minutes. In added time another inswinging corner was headed cleanly into the net from the edge of the goal area with May floundering and nowhere near the ball. He then atoned with a good save with his feet to a low shot from inside the penalty area to prevent an even heavier defeat.
Eagles finished with 10 men after Gabe Ryan was sent off for kicking out against an opponent,Match report to follow
