MATCH REPORT TUESDAY 12 AUGUST 2025
SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1
LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 1 LONDON COLNEY 1
Despite creating a number of goal scoring chances, particularly in the latter stages of the game, Eagles once more failed to beat their opposition and had to settle for a draw.
Eagles were first to threaten goal when after 12 minutes Rod Agyeman-Duah headed a cross from the left side wide of goal from near the penalty spot. A few minutes later they gained a free kick mid way inside the London Colney half which was heading for goal, but the visiting keeper made a good save to parry the ball before dropping on it as Eagles forwards rushed forward. In the event it was London Colney who went ahead after 19 minutes when a corner was headed into the net from the edge of the goal area, outjumping defenders and keeper.
They nearly got a second a couple of minutes later when they gained possession well inside the Eagles half. The ball was fed forward but the final shot was well blocked by a covering Eagles defender inside the penalty area. Another chance for the visitors arose after 24 minutes when they gained a direct free kick 20 yards from goal in a central position, but the kick was lifted well over the defensive wall and the cross bar.
After 33 minutes Eagles gained possession near half way . The ball was fed to Agyeman-Duah whose low pass reached Will Blair just outside the penalty area, but his low shot was well saved by the keeper at full stretch. The keeper was called into action again after 42 minutes when he saved a low shot from inside the penalty area with his feet at his near post. Just before half time Eagles did get another chance to score with a long pass down the centre of the field putting a forward clear on goal but his shot from the edge of the penalty area was wide of the advancing keeper and the goal.
Soon after half time Eagles almost equalised after a low cross into the London Colney penalty area caused panic amongst defenders, and in the scramble that followed the ball was eventually cleared by the keeper at his far post just yards from goal. An Eagles free kick on the right side of the field inside the visitors’ half was quickly taken and a low cross into the penalty area was flicked on towards an open goal, but the ball was cleared off the goal line by a defender. Just past the hour mark an equalised did come when Theo Nobbs on the edge of the goal area headed into the net off the inside of the cross bar.
Play switched from end to end. Max Smith sent a free kick into the penalty area which was held by the keeper at full stretch after a scramble in the area. Another free kick into the London Colney penalty area led to a goalmouth scramble and frantic mis kicks by both sides before a low shot from near the penalty spot was well saved by the keeper diving to his right. He then had to pull off another great save after a long hoof upfield from the Eagles half put an Eagles forward clear of defenders. His shot was pushed clear for a corner, followed by another goalmouth scramble before the ball was cleared.
Another long ball down the centre of the field put Blair clear on goal but after turning inside a defender he fired his shot from the edge of the penalty area well over the cross bar and Eagles had to settle for a draw in a match they deserved to win thanks to the performance of the visiting keeper.
