MATCH REPORT THURSDAY 2 APRIL 2026
SPARTAN SOUTN MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1
LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 0 EATON SOCON 1
The Eagles produced a spirited performance against a side second in the league table, who were stronger physically and more experienced, and deserved a draw after more than matching their opponents in the second half.
The visitors were dominant in the early stages of the game and after 7 minutes had their first chance to score when a long throw into the penalty area was headed wide of goal. A few minutes later a free kick from 20 yards distance was blocked by Eagles defensive wall, and after 18 minutes a low shot from outside the penalty area fizzed just wide of Eagles goal.
Eagles came more into the game and Will Blair sent a free kick from 25 yards out in a central position wide of goal after 25 minutes. On the half hour an Eaton Socon corner was headed narrowly over the cross bar at the far post, but minutes later they went ahead when the ball was not cleared from the area by Eagles defence and a cross back across goal was headed into the net by an unmarked forward.
Eagles enjoyed a good spell just before half time and the Eaton Socon keeper had to make a good save to keep out a strong shot by Blair. Jake Ellis Holmes then created a shooting chance for himself after weaving his way through the Eaton Socon defence, but his shot from the edge of the penalty area flew high and wide.
Eaton Socon started the second half strongly with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area going wide and minutes later a corner was headed over the cross bar at the far post, before a low shot from the edge of the penalty area was deflected wide of the Eagles goal. Eagles then came more into the game. Just after the hour mark max Smith lifted a free kick from 20 yards over the defensive wall towards the top corner of the net, only for it to be punched clear by the keeper. The ball reached an Eagles forward, but the shot dipped just over the cross bar. The keeper then saved another shot and the follow up was hacked off the goal line by a defender.
Eagles continued to press and after 80 minutes were unlucky not to get the equalising goal. A long throw was not cleared by the Eaton Socon defence. The ball fell to Blair standing in space just outside the goal area. His shot was heading for the top corner of the net before it struck the face of the keeper and was deflected wide of goal. Another long throw reached Blair but his shot from just outside the penalty area went high and wide. In the final minutes of added time a low cross into the Eaton Socon penalty area created another goal chance but the shot was deflected wide of goal by a defender.
