MATCH REPORT TUESDAY 31 MARCH 2026
SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1
LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 4 SHEFFORD AND CAMPTON 0
Eagles dominated the first half creating a host of chances to score, including hitting the woodwork of the goal twice and missing a penalty before securing a comfortable victory thanks to 2 goals in the last stage of the game.
Shay Kelly blazed over the cross bar in the opening minutes, but Eagles went ahead after 11 minutes, Rory Gillham beat the keeper to the ball in the penalty area but his first shot hit the keeper’s body. The ball came back to Gillham who was able to slot the ball into an empty net.
Shefford rarely threatened Eagles goal although a long shot from at least 25 yards skimmed the Eagles cross bar. Eagles continued to dominate play and after 21 minutes Gillham struck the post with a fierce shot. 5 minutes later Will Blair received the ball and cut inside into the penalty before releasing a shot intended for the top corner of the net, which struck the top of the far post and bounced clear of goal.
On the half hour mark another long distance shot by Shefford went just wide of goal with Sonny May having to scramble across his goal. Then after 43 minutes Eagles won a penalty when a defender brought down his opponent. Gillham fired the penalty well over the cross bar. Minutes later a high cross found Gillham standing unmarked near the penalty spot, but his header passed just wide of the goal. At the other end Shefford headed a corner just wide of goal at the far post and then the Shefford keeper was called into action to push wide a shot from inside the penalty area following a long throw.
The first chance for Eagles in the second half came when Gillham raced past a defender into the penalty area but there was no power in his shot which was comfortably gathered by the Shefford keeper. Minutes later Eagles went 2-0 ahead. A long throw into the penalty area reached Ayub Yaseen in a crowd of players and he shot into the back of the net from inside the goal area. Another long throw was headed towards the Shefford goal but this time the ball went straight to the keeper.
Another chance for the Eagles came a few minutes later but a low shot was screwed just wide of the far post from a tight angle. May in the Eagles goal did not see as much action but was fortunate that a Shefford forward, facing a clear sight of goal near the penalty spot, sent the ball straight at May. A minute later he had to make a decent save to push away a shot at his near post.
Shefford increased the pressure as the game reached its final stages with a succession of corners. One was headed just wide of goal and a shot from the edge of Eagles penalty area flashed over the cross bar.
As the game went into added time Eagles then scored two quick goals. First a corner to the far post found Yaseen unmarked, and he sent his shot into the far corner of the net from the edge of the goal area. A couple of minutes before the final whistle Blair gained possession and raced deep into the Shefford half before sending a low cross to Kelly standing in the penalty area, who side stepped an opponent and shot low into the net.
