MATCH REPORT SAT 29 AUGUST 2026

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1

LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 1 IRCHESTER 1

The visitors had the better of the first half but in the second half Eagles posed a greater threat to the Irchester goal and got a deserved equaliser 4 minutes from full time.

Early pressure came from Irchester and after 16 minutes a shot from outside the Eagles penalty area was sent high and wide of goal followed by another well wide effort a couple of minutes later. Soon after an Irchester forward had a clear run on goal but after racing into the penalty area he delivered a low cross from near the goal line straight to an Eagles defender and not an Irchester forward waiting on the edge of the goal area.

Eagles did not pose much of a threat to the Irchester goal until the half hour mark when a long throw was headed on and caused a scramble in a crowded goal area before the keeper was able to drop on the ball. At the other end a low shot from inside Eagles penalty area flashed past the far post and by half time neither side had managed to get a goal bound shot on target.

But soon after the start of the second half Irchester went ahead after a run into Eagles penalty area and 4 minutes later sent a free kick flashing just wide of the far post. Eagles counter attacked and two minutes later had a great chance to score after a run down the centre of the field with Irchester defence exposed, but a final decision near the edge of the penalty area to pass rather than shoot led to a final shot blocked by a defender.

Eagles then created a series of opportunities to score as the half progressed. A long throw was headed wide of goal, then a cross to the far post was sent high over the Irchester cross bar. Another shot  goes well wide of goal after being deflected by a defender but  minutes before the final whistle Eagles  did  level the score with a Ryan Lamond freekick near the edge of the Irchester penalty area which passed through the defensive wall and nestled in the bottom corner of the net with the keeper on the wrong side of goal anticipating the ball going round the defensive wall rather than through it.
