MATCH REPORT 7 OCTOBER 2025
SPARTA SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1
LANGFORD 1 LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 2
A strong second half performance enabled the Eagles to overcome their local rivals in a hard-fought game.
They were first to threaten goal after just 8 minutes when a long throw into the Langford penalty area was headed back across goal and a crowd of players to Olly Humphreyes at the far post , but the keeper was able to smother his close range goal attempt. Minutes later play swung to the other end and a shot from the edge of Eagles penalty area was sent over the crossbar.
After 15 minutes Langford did get the opening goal after a long punt upfield was chased down the rightside catching Eagles defenders out of position. Eagles keeper George Coomes raced out from goal, but he was unable to intercept the ball, which was clinically dispatched low into the far corner of the unguarded net.
5 minutes later Eagles had a good chance to score when a corner was headed towards goal at the far post, but the keeper managed to block the ball. Another Eagles long throw was then headed over the cross bar from near the penalty spot as play swung from end to end. Eagles nearly went further behind just before half time when a direct free kick was floated into the penalty area and cleverly flicked on by a Langford forward towards goal, but Coomes was in the right position to block the shot.
Eagles then created 2 great chances almost on half time. A break downfield forced the Langford keeper to dash from goal to block the ball at the feet of two advancing Eagles forwards, and then Rod Agyeman- Duah raced down the right side of the field outpacing defenders before putting a low cross into the Langford penalty area, but a shot at the far post by a waiting Eagle was just wide of goal.
This should have acted as a warning to Langford and early in the second half Agyeman-Duah repeated his run Josh Helmore’s shot was deflected wide for a corner. A shot from the edge of the penalty area was then straight at the Langford keeper. Eagles began to dominate play and after an hour first Agyeman-Duah headed another long throw just over the cross bar and then a corner was headed against a post and another corner. A shot from outside the penalty area went just wide of the Langford goal and Eagles seemed unable to find a goal until after 67 minutes Helmore picked up an Eagles corner inside the penalty area and smashed the ball into the roof of the Langford net. He then had a great chance to get a second goal a minute later when he was put clear on goal with only the keeper to beat, but he sliced the ball well wide of goal.
Eagles were fighting for every ball. Agyeman- Duah was a real handful for the Langford defence and after another run down the right side his cross was put wide of goal from inside the penalty area. The winning goal did come just after 80 minutes after he picked up a long ball downfield and raced into the penalty area before scoring with a low shot from near the penalty spot.
Drama continued to the final whistle as Ellis Coker shot over the crossbar from outside the Langford penalty area and another long throw was headed just wide of the Langford goal.
