Shefford Town & Campton

MATCH REPORT TUESDAY 23 SEPTEMBER 2025

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1

SHEFFORD TOWN AND CAMPTON 2  LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 2

After dominating the first half Eagles were to regret not scoring more goals in the first half and were eventually forced to settle for a draw against a team near the foot of the league table.

Eagles made a good early start and were unlucky not to go ahead after just a couple of minutes when the Shefford keeper had to make a smart save at his near post from a low shot by Josh Helmore who had muscled past defenders to within 6 yards from goal.

In the following minutes both Eagles and Shefford had shots off target before Eagles lost possession in mid field and Shefford forced Eagles debut keeper Arun Khan to make a blocking save. Eagles countered with a low cross from the goal line   which was hit straight at the keeper from near the penalty spot with a clear sight of goal.

After 15 minutes Eagles had a free kick just outside the penalty area. Luke Shimell bent the ball round the defensive wall towards the top corner of the net, but it crashed back into play off the crossbar. The Shefford keeper then had to make a fine save at full stretch to push away a goal bound header after a long throw into the penalty area was not cleared by defenders. Shortly after he made a routine save at the foot of his near post as Eagles piled on the pressure.

Shimell then put a direct free kick in a central position at the edge of the penalty area just wide of goal. On the half hour Shefford keeper made another fine save to fingertip clear a shot heading for the top corner of the net, but a few minutes later Eagles did finally get the first goal following an Eagles corner. Adam Branch scored firmly with a low shot from near the penalty spot. Pressure on Shefford continued. Shay Kelly broke clear of defenders and forced the keeper to claw away the goal bound shot, and the resulting corner was headed over the crossbar at the far post. Eagles threatened Shefford with a series of long throws by Shimell and the Shefford keeper had to make a smart save to keep out a shot from Gabe Ryan at the near post.

Shefford came more into the game in the second half and a few minutes after the restart Eagles conceded a equalising goal after a defensive slip gave a Shefford forward a clear run on goal, and his shot found the net from the edge of the goal area. After 71 minutes Shefford scored again with a low shot past the Eagles keeper from inside the penalty area.

Play swung from end to end, and the home keeper had to make a save at the foot of his post. Within 5 minutes Eagles were level, with a low shot by Rory Gillham from inside the penalty area. Rod Agyeman-Duah then shot wide from a good position but tight angle, and his cross to the far post after 83 minutes was headed straight at the keeper.

Eagles continued to seek a winning goal in added time, but another long throw was headed over the crossbar, and at the other end Khan had to fling himself across goal to push away a shot which was heading for the top corner of the net. The resulting corner went to an unmarked forward who shot just wide of the goal.

Eagles final effort was too close to the Shefford keeper and both sides had to accept a draw.
