Cranfield Utd

MATCH REPORT SAT 27 SEPTEMBER 2025

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1

LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 1 CRANFIELD UTD 2

Despite the difference in their league positions this was a game between two evenly matched sides which Eagles could have won if they had taken several good chances to score. Cranfield had fewer chances but were more clinical in their finishing.

Neither side threatened the opposition goal for the first 20 minutes but then Eagles were first to make goal attempt when Shay Kelly shot high and wide. 5 minutes later Eagles had another decent chance when a cross into the Cranfield penalty area produced a great save by the keeper at full stretch to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Cranfield should have scored on the half hour when an unmarked forward faced a gaping goal from near the penalty spot, but George Coomes made a fine save to block the low shot with his legs.

Play swung from end to end and a cross from the right touchline into the Cranfield penalty area produced a shot wide of goal. Almost on half time Austin Christie headed over the crossbar a free kick for Eagles and then a low shot was straight at the Cranfield keeper.

Soon after half time Rory Gillham forced the keeper into another fine save a few yards from goal  as he managed to push the ball wide of goal for a corner. At the other end 5 minutes later Coomes at full stretch had to push away a low shot from outside Eagles penalty area, but in the very next Cranfield attack they went ahead with poor defensive marking and a low shot  from just inside he penalty  area into the far corner of the net

Just past the hour mark a corner to Eagles caused a panic in the Cranfield penalty area with Eagles just unable to force the ball through a crowd of players and into the net. Coomes then had to block the ball with his body at his near post after Christie has slipped and allowed a Cranfield forward to have a free run on goal. Cranfield turned on the pressure with Eagles not able to keep possession and at times barely able to get into the Cranfield half. From one rare threat on goal the Cranfield keeper was forced to make a good save to save a shot from Olly Humphreyes, and Rod Agyeman-Duah dribbled through the Cranfield defence only to slip near the edge of the goal area and put the ball well wide of goal.

As the game reached its final stages Kelly ran unchecked into the Cranfield penalty area but with only the keeper to beat pushed the ball a bit too far ahead, which allowed the keeper to make a save to push the ball wide of goal. Then almost at full time Cranfield scored a second goal after a break down the right side and a high cross into the Eagles penalty area which Coomes could not reach through a crowd of players. A low shot found the back of the Eagles net.

In added time Eagles did finally manage to score after a direct free kick from the half way line deep into the Cranfield penalty area allowed Gillham to drill the ball into the net for a consolation goal, but too little too late.
