WELLINGBOROUGH WHITWORTH 4 LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 4

Just as it seemed that Eagles would return home with 3 points after a strong first half performance the home side scored an equalising goal a few minutes before the end of 17 minutes of added time in the second half.

Eagles started well and went ahead after only 10 minutes when Rory Gillham scored with a low shot into the far corner of the net They almost scored a second after 20 minutes when a direct free kick from the edge of the penalty flew towards the top corner of the net but was tipped wide of the goal by the keeper.

Within a couple of minutes, the score was level and Wellingborough had a couple more chances to add to their score in the following minutes, A Wellingborough forward was played into a good position, but his shot went well over the Eagles cross bar. A minute later a shot from a tight angle was held by Sonny May at his near post.

Eagles regained the lead after 37 minutes when Gillham chased a long ball downfield, brushed off a defender and shot low into the far corner of the net. Five minutes later Eagles scored a third goal after a shocking defensive mistake by Wellingborough. A poor pass back to the keeper was chased into the penalty area by Olly Humphreyes and as the keeper tried to boot the ball away his clearance hit Humphreyes on the back and bounced into an empty goal.

Eagles continued to threaten a fourth goal just before half time. A low shot from the edge of the penalty area went just wide of goal as the keeper scrambled across, and then a defender attempted to hoof the ball clear from inside the goal area and succeeded in hitting the ball against his own cross bar.

Wellingborough were more dangerous second half and May was soon called into action to save a low shot aimed for the far corner of the net. A few minutes they did score when an inswinging corner to the far post was forced into the net through a crowd of players clustered in the goal area. Mid way into the second half they were awarded a disputed penalty and did level the score.

Within 3 minutes Eagles struck back after they were awarded a free kick on the left side of the penalty area, and Humphreyes was able to turn the ball into the net at the near post a few yards from goal. Wellingborough dominated the exchanges in the final stages of the game and May had to make a fine save with his feet a low shot from near the edge of the goal area. He then pushed wide a low shot from 20 yards at full stretch and soon after made another good save to turn a shot from the inside of the penalty area over his cross bar. He was finally beaten a few minutes before the end of an unusually long period of added time when a cross into Eagles penalty area was headed into the far corner of the net from the edge of the goal area.
