MATCH REPORT THURSDAY 9 APRIL 2026

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1

LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 2 AMPTHILL t 1

The Eagles put in a great performance to deservedly beat their promotion chasing visitors and were unlucky not to win by a greater margin.

Ampthill dominated the early stages of the game although not testing keeper Sonny May. He was called into action after 23 minutes to push away a direct free kick 20 yards from goal, and a follow up shot from a tight angle hit the foot of the post.

On the half hour it was Eagles that took the lead when a low cross from the right side into the Ampthill penalty area was turned into the net by Rory Gillham. A few minutes later a low shot by Ollie Humphreyes from the edge of the penalty area went just wide of goal. The goal action continued with a shot high over the Ampthill cross bar followed by a mad scramble in their goal area with the keeper eventually managing to block the ball.

Just before half time there was drama at the other end.  Zubayr Rahman badly mis judged a back pass to May leaving an opponent facing an open goal. To recover the situation, he threw himself into a desperate blocking tackle and both players fell to the ground. The referee awarded a penalty, which was firmly hit into the Eagles net. Final action of the half came when a fierce low shot passed just wide of the Ampthill goal.

Early in the second half a long ball downfield was missed by Eagles defence leaving a forward free and facing an open goal, but he hesitated and the final shot was blocked. At the other end Lawrence Burton was put clear of defenders but his shot was also blocked.

Ampthill then hit the top of the post and cross bar as play swung from end to end. Eagles were causing a great deal of problems with long throws into the Ampthill penalty area, and a header was headed off the Ampthill goal line by a covering defender. Within a minute an Eagles free kick from near the touchline into the penalty area was headed narrowly wide of goal by a defender. The resulting corner was then turned into the net by Jack Heaton from close range. Eagles turned on the pressure in the last quarter of the game. A shot from the edge of the area beat the keeper but struck the foot of a post. Then a shot from the edge of the penalty area, which looked heading for a certain goal was flicked just wide of goal by the boot of an Ampthill player and from the corner another shot was deflected wide. There was then an amazing escape for the Ampthill goal. A long ball was chased downfield. The Ampthill keeper made a great save to palm the ball away from goal and it fell to Burton facing an open goal. He took an extra touch to control the ball and his shot was blocked. A series of Eagles players then rained shots on goal which were blocked by defenders in the goal area before the ball was finally cle
