MATCH REPORT TUESDAY 4 NOVEMBER 2025
HINCHINGBROOKE CUP
YAXLEY 3 LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 1
Eagles poor run of results continued but they matched their opponents, who play at a level above them, until a few minutes before half time when they conceded two quick goals.
Yaxley had more attempts on goal in the first half and were the dominant team from the start of the game. Their first close attempt on goal came after 19 minutes when they gained possession in Eagles half and finished with a low shot towards the bottom corner of the net which Eagles keeper Adam Seymour managed to tip wide of goal. After 27 minutes a misplaced pass by Eagles inside their own half gave another opportunity to Yaxley but the low shot from outside the penalty area was held by Seymour at full stretch.
As Yaxley piled on the pressure Eagles defence stayed firm until the 45th minute when a low cross was controlled by a Yaxley forward and a low shot dispatched into the centre of the net through a crowd of players leaving Seymour unsighted. Eagles tried to respond but a shot from 20 yards was wide of goal. Then after 49 minutes Yaxley should have added to their score but a cross into the Eales penalty area was headed wide from 6 yards out by an unmarked forward. Relief for Eagles was short lived. A minute later Yaxley scored again after gaining possession near halfway. A cross into the penalty area led to a shot on goal from near the penalty spot which Seymour managed to turn on to his post, but the rebound was hammered into the roof of the net from close in by a Yaxely player left unmarked near the far post.
Eagles escaped further punishment early in the second half when a Yaxely corner was sent into the middle of the penalty area and a crowd of players. A scramble ensued before the ball was hacked off the Eagles goal line by a covering defender. Soon after at the other end Eagles had a great chance to claw a goal back with run into the Yaxely penalty area through a crowd of defenders before powering a low shot towards the bottom corner of the net, but it was deflected just wide of goal.
Midway through the second half they did pull a goal back when an Eagles corner was headed firmly into the back of the net from the edge of the goal area by Ayub Yaseen.
Minutes later Yaxely missed another great chance at the other end when a cross from the goal line was mis headed towards goal but instead found a Yaxely forward whose shot cannoned off the body of Seymour before being put out of play by another Yaxely forward waiting at the far post.
Play swung from end to end. An Eagles corner was headed just too high and wide of goal from the edge of the goal area and then Seymour saved a low shot from a narrow angle at his near post. Almost at the final whistle Yaxely then got the decisive next goal with a direct free kick some 20 yards from goal in a central position, which was sent round the defensive wall and into the corner of the net past a despairing dive by Seymour who had stationed himself closer to the other side of the goal.
