MATCH REPORT SAT 8 NOVEMBER 2025
SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1
IRCHESTER 6 LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 1
Some clinical finishing by Irchester in the first half punished Eagles and led them to continue their losing streak, although the gap between the two sides was not as great as the score suggests.
Irchester went ahead as early as 10 minutes with a free kick from near halfway deep into Eagles penalty area. The ball ran to an Irchester forward a few yards from goal and he placed the ball in the net with a low shot from the edge of the goal area.
Eagles struck back and within a minute had equalised. A break down the right side and low cross into the penalty area was slotted home by Olly Humphreyes from near the penalty spot. They nearly scored again after 18 minutes but a low shot from inside the penalty area was past the post with the keeper beaten. On the half hour Eagles had another scoring chance after a long ball downfield was headed on, but a low shot from inside the penalty area was blocked by the feet of the home keeper at the foot of his near post.
Irchester then went ahead on 36 minutes after Eagles conceded a penalty, which was cleanly sent into the far corner of the net. Things got worse for Letchworth in the minutes of added time. A high ball downfield over the heads of defenders allowed a forward a clear run on goal and he lofted the ball over the head of keeper Adam Seymour into the net from the edge of the penalty area. A few minutes later it was 4-1. After gaining possession in mid field Irchester played the ball into acres of space near the edge of the Eagles penalty area. A ball inside a defender found a waiting forward in space, and he scored from the edge of the goal area.
A few minutes Eagles nearly got a goal back when a free kick halfway inside the Irchester half was floated deep into the penalty area and headed towards goal past the keeper, the ball was cleared off the goal line by a covering defender. The Irchester keeper then had to tip a far post header from a corner over his cross bar, quickly followed by making a good save to block the ball on his goal line after another Eagles corner was headed towards goal from near the centre of the penalty area.
Play switched to the other end and Seymour had to push wide a shot from the edge of the penalty area, but Irchester scored a fifth goal from the resulting corner. 20 minutes later he was called into action again. A low cross into the penalty area reached an unmarked forward whose shot from near the penalty spot looked like a certain goal before Seymour launched himself to make a great save and push the ball over his cross bar. He was soon called into action again a few minutes later when a defensive lapse inside Eagles penalty area set a forward clear on goal but Seymour blocked the shot at his near post, and the resulting corner was headed over the crossbar.
A couple of minutes later it was the turn of Irchester to make a defensive mistake with a poor pass across the edge of their own penalty which was intercepted and the ball fed to Will Blair. His angled shot from inside the penalty area beat the keeper but was cleared off the goal line by a defender guarding the near post.
In added time Irchester added insult to injury when a long ball was chased upfield from inside his own half, and as the player entered the penalty area and turned inside a defender he was brought down and a penalty awarded. That was converted with a firm shot into the corner of Eagles net.
