MATCH REPORT SAT 4 APRIL 2026
SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1
LONDON COLNEY 1 LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 2
This was an uninspiring game between two sides in the lower end of the league table.
Eagles dominated the early stages of the game. They first threatened a goal after 11 minutes following a run down the right side of the pitch and low cross into the penalty area, but a goal bound shot was deflected wide by a defender. The home keeper was called into action after a quarter of an hour when Eagles chased a long ball downfield. The low cross into the penalty area was met by Rory Gillham near the penalty spot but his shot was well saved by the keeper. A minute later Eagles did get the ball into the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside
Against the run of play London Colney went ahead at the half hour mark following a break down the left side and low cross into the penalty, which was met with a shot from near the penalty spot into the top corner of the net
Eagles got the equalising goal after 40 minutes. Having gained possession in mid field the ball was fed to Gillham inside the London Colney penalty area, and he crashed the ball into the roof of the net from near the edge of the goal area. Within 7 minutes Eagles scored again when Gillham lifted the ball over the keeper into the roof of the net.
Most of the goal action in the second half was produced by the Eagles with keeper Sonny May being almost a spectator. At the other end the home keeper held a low shot at his near post early in the second half and 5 minutes later an Eagles free kick from 20 yards distance was sent well wide of goal. Minutes later the home goal escaped when an Eagles corner was headed wide and then another Eagles corner was not cleared by the London Colney defence. There was a scramble in the goal area and a close-range goal bound shot hit another Eagles player to be deflected wide of goal.
In the closing stages of the game Eagles should have scored a third goal following a run into the penalty area and shot which hit the body of the advancing keeper and came back into play to another Eagles forward, who lashed the ball high and wide from the edge of the penalty area. Eagles continued to attack the London Colney defence and another low shot fizzed wide of goal as the game neared its end.
