MATCH REPORT SAT 11 APRIL 2026
SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1
LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 0 LEIGHTON TOWN RES 2
This was an uninspiring end of season game between two poor teams sitting in the lower part of the league table.
Eagles dominated the first half but despite a succession of corners failed to score. It was Leighton who got the first shot on target after less than 10 minutes when Sonny May had to block a shot at his near post after the Leighton forward had a clear sight of goal
A few minutes later another goal scoring chance was missed by Letchworth when Will Blair floated a cross to the far post, but the strong wind took the ball just over the head of an advancing forward. After 25 minutes the Leighton keeper was alert to paw away another inswinging corner by Max Smith and then had to make a great save to push away the ball heading for the top corner of the net.
Eagles increased the pressure before half time and Ollie Humphreyes headed a cross just wide of goal from the edge of the goal area and then his shot for goal was saved by the keeper; the rebound was sent high and wide by Rory Gillham. In the final action of the half a long throw into the Leighton penalty area and a crowd of players caused a mad scramble before the keeper made another save to tip a shot wide of goal
Leighton threatened more in the second half as Eagles ran out of ideas, seldom troubling the visitor’s keeper. In early action there was a mad scramble in the Eagles goal area before the ball was hacked clear, and then a header was straight at May. Another chance for the visitors went begging when an unmarked Leighton forward had a clear run on goal down the centre of the field but he failed to properly control the ball before he was closed down by May and a defender.
It looked as if neither side was capable of scoring a goal but then Leighton scored with a close-range header from an an unswinging corner, exploiting the lack of height and physical strength of May and his defenders. Another corner was then headed straight at May. As the game headed into its final minutes May pushed away a low shot wide of his near post, and from the resulting corner Leighton scored an identical goal to the first. Leighton finished the stronger team with Eagles attack totally ineffectual, and at the end May had to make another save at full stretch to stop a low shot from 30 yards distance.
