MATCH REPORT TUESDAY 14 APRIL 2026
SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS DIV 1
LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 1 LANGFORD 2
Defensive weakness again cost Eagles a win against local rivals Langford . The game was feisty and over physical at times in the second half, with lots of yellow cards for both teams, and each side receiving a red card.
Langford looked sharper in the first quarter and Eagles were lucky not to concede after 12 minutes when a poor back pass was intercepted by a Langford forward inside the penalty area, Keeper Sonny May had to dive at his feet to recover the ball just in time to save a touch into an open goal.
Both sides then had shots well off target and Eagles nearly benefited from a defensive mistake at the other end when Will Blair’s shot from 25 yards out was spilled by the keeper, but he was fouled by an Eagles forward following in. A minute later Langford nearly scored when an inswinging corner was headed just wide of the Eagles goal at the far post.
On the half hour Eagles scored the first goal of the game when a shot by Olly Humphryes hit a covering defender and kindly fell to the feet of Rory Gillham, who scored with a low shot into the far corner of the net. May then had to make a great save to push wide a low shot from inside the penalty area and just before half time he blocked a low shot following a Langford free kick about 20 yards from goal.
He was again called into action shortly after half time when the Eagles defender misjudged a high ball into the penalty area giving a Langford forward a clear sight of goal before May rushed forward to block the shot. A minute later Blair sent a free kick from a central position straight at the keeper who then dropped another free kick from mid way inside the Langford half, but no Eagles forward was able to take advantage of the mistake.
A minute later a Langford shot hit Eagles crossbar and came back into play causing a mad scramble between a group of players in the goal area. May managed to parry one shot but the ball was eventually pushed into the open Eagles goal. A minute later Langford went down to 10 men after a red card was shown by the referee. Eagles pressed forward and the ball was hooked jus over the Langford crossbar from a corner kick, but it was the visitors who got the winning goal with a long ball over the Eagles defensive cover which was hooked over May from inside the goal area.
May then got sent off for directing foul and abusive language towards the referee which ended Eagles hopes of rescuing a point. In the final minutes another poor back pass by Eagles was intercepted by a Langford forward but his shot was straight at sub keeper Kain Brown.
