MATCH REPORT FRIDAY 17 APRIL 2026

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1

STOTFOLD RES 6 LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 3

After having a 2-0 interval lead Eagles defence collapsed early in the second half making bad defensive mistakes, and they finished the season with a heavy defeat.

The home side were first to threaten a goal after just 5 minutes when a free kick near the edge of Eagles penalty area was straight at Eagles keeper GeorgeCoomes. Around 10 minutes later another free kick low into the penalty area was turned just over Eagles cross bar from near the penalty spot.

Despite Stotfold having the best of the opening stages it was the Eagles that went ahead after 25 minutes following a run down the left touchline by Lawrence Burton and high cross, which was headed into the corner of the net by Shay Kelly.

Minutes later a shot from outside the penalty area goes wide of Eagles goal and then an inswinging corner to the far post was headed just wide from a few yards out. It therefore came as a surprise when just before half time Eagles scored a second goal. Eagles corner was punched out by the Stotfold keeper but only to Danny Charles, who smashed the ball into the net from just inside the penalty area.

After half time it was a very different game. Within minutes a free kick from just outside the penalty area went past the defensive wall but straight at Coomes. A couple of minutes later Stotfold did score when a high cross from the left touchline totally deceived Coomes, going over his head and landing in the far corner of the net. A few minutes later the home side equalised when following a long throw into the Eagles penalty area the ball pinged around the goal area in a crowd of players before finding the net.

Goals then came thick and fast for Stotfold as Eagles defence collapsed. First a corner was headed towards goal from near the penalty spot before taking a deflection into goal, and 3 minutes later Stotfold scored from a penalty. Coomes saved the spot kick but could not hold the ball, which fell kindly at the feet of the penalty taker, who followed up to push the ball into the net from a couple of yards distance. 15 minutes later Stotfold scored their fifth goal as a long ball down the centre dipped over the heads of Eagles defence leaving a forward with a clear run on goal. He made no mistake putting a low shot into the far corner of the net.10 minutes later it was six after another Eagles defensive lapse. As the ball travelled into the penalty area a wild miskicked clearance landed at the feet of a Stotfold player, whose low shot towards the centre of the goal passed under the diving body of Coomes and into the Eagles net.

As the game went into its final minutes there was still more goals drama, but this time it was Eagles that scored. A high cross from outside the penalty area by Ryan Morgan should have been collected by the keeper, but the ball sailed through his flapping hands and into the far top corner of the net. Coomes then saved a low shot from outside the penalty action and in the last minute a Stotfold forward went clear on goal but saved Eagles blushes by firing a low shot straight at Coomes guarding his near post.
