GLADWISH CHALLENGE TROPHY

HARPENDEN TOWN 7 LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 0

Eagles were outclassed by their opposition from the premier division of the Spartan South Midlands League, with poor defending and little attacking threat for much of the game.

Harpenden showed their intention to attack from as early as the 6th minute with a low cross into the Eagles penalty area and a shot was blocked by defenders for a corner, which was headed over the cross bar. This was repeated after 15 minutes as Eagles defence struggled to deal with Harpenden attacks down the right side. At the other end a low shot by Eagles from the edge of the penalty area was blocked by the home keeper at the foot of his near post and the rebound into play as fired into the empty net, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

Harpenden went ahead after 26 minutes with another break down the right side and low cross into the Eagles penalty area which was slotted into the goal from the edge of the goal area. A few minutes later a shot from the edge of the penalty area went wide of Eagles goal, and it had another escape after 36 minutes when a Harpenden forward dribbled past defenders into the penalty area, but his low shot hit the foot of the post with the rebound being sent wide of goal.

Relief for the Eagles was short lived as a few minutes later a cross was headed into their net from inside the goal area. Just before half time it was 3-0 when another cross from the right side was brought down by a loosely marked forward and fired low into Eagles net.

Harpenden continued to press after half time with an early effort blazed high and wide from the edge of the penalty area. Attempts on the Eagles goal quickly followed with one effort deflected by a defender over the cross bar for a corner which was headed wide, and another shot ballooned high over the cross bar. Shots went wide of Eagles goal before Harpenden scored a fourth goal with a lot shot from near the penalty spot by an unmarked forward. Worst was to follow when a Harpenden forward ran into acres of space, crossed into the penalty area and the ball was cleanly sent low into the corner of Eagles net.

4 minutes later it was 6-0. Eagles’ defence failed to deal with a long punt downfield by the home keeper, the ball fell to a Harpenden forward on the edge of the penalty area who placed the ball into the top corner of the net. They almost conceded another when keeper George Coomes carelessly sent the ball straight to a waiting forward who shot well over the cross bar.

As the game came towards its end Eagles conceded a 7th goal when a cross was pushed into the net from close range. In the final minutes there could have been an eighth goal when a shot from the edge of the penalty area hit the cross bar and bounced over.
