MATCH REPORT SAT 21 FEBRUARY 2026
SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1
LONG BUCKBY 0 LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 1
Eagles continued their recent away success after an absence of games due to wet weather postponements. They could have won by a bigger margin, but the single goal was enough to secure all three points.
Eagles forced a corner in the first minute but did not test the home keeper until 15minutes when Charlie Austin received the ball from Austin Christie and forced the keeper to make a good save. He was in action again a minute later when a great cross from Ryan Morgan and a header by Rory Gillham was tipped over the crossbar. Gillham then hit over a cross from Lawrence Burton after 25 minutes. Another chance fell to Charlie Austin but it was hit over the cross bar and on the half hour the keeper saved a shot by Austin with his feet.
Buckby did not create a chance to score until 36 minutes but it produced a comfortable save by George Coomes. Both sides had shots going wide or saved by the keeper before half time with neither side being able to get the first goal of the game.
Coomes was called into action a minute after half time but made a comfortable save. At the other end Gillham headed the ball into the arms of the keeper. Eagles then forced a succession of 5 corners without threatening the Long Buckby goal, but then after 67 minutes Eagles got the all-important goal when a cross from Burton was headed on by Morgan and scrambled over the goal line by Josh Helmore.
Eagles continued to put pressure on the home defence as they made a series of substitutions. Long Bucby had chances from a late corner and a free kick on the edge of the Eagles penalty area, but failed to test the Eagles goal, and at the other end the keeper made a save after good hold up play by Helmore.
