MATCH REPORT TUESDAY 27 JANUARY 2026

SPARTAN SOUTH IDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1

ROYSTON TOWN RES 3 LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 4

Eagles managed to outscore their local rivals in a game with lots of goals and drama. They got their noses ahead after 17 minutes when the ball was played cross field to Stan Clare, who took the ball into the penalty area before slotting the ball low into the far corner of the net.

On the half hour Roston equalised when a cross into the penalty area from the left touchline was volleyed into the far corner of the net giving Eagles keeper no chance of saving. Eagles pressed forward before half time and after a shot from 30 yards was straight at the Royston keeper they scored a second goal, Charlie Austin tucking a low cross into the net from inside the goal area.

That lead only lasted 5 minutes until Royston were awarded a highly contested penalty. After a break down the centre and cross from the right side into Eagles penalty area keeper Adam Seymour was judged to have fouled an opponent on the edge of his goal area as he and another Eagles defender tried close down a waiting Royston forward. The penalty was placed low into the net to draw the sides level at half time.

Ater half time neither keeper was troubled as the two sides battled in midfield. A free kick to Royston was floated into Eagles penalty area but a low shot was comfortably held by Seymour. A few minutes later it was Eagles who scored the next goal with a cross cum shot from a tight angle outside the penalty area by Lawrence Burton which sailed over the head of the keeper standing at his near post into the far side of the net. An in swinging Eagles corner then kissed the top of the Royston cross bar before coming back into play and was headed towards goal by an Eagles forward, but straight into the arms of the keeper.

Mid way into the second half Eagles scored a fourth goal when Jake Ellis-Holmes ran down the centre of the field to the edge of the Royston penalty area before placing a daisy cutter shot into the far corner of the net. Royston counter attacked and Eagles goal had a close escape when a low shot from a tight angle was blocked for a corner by Seymour at his near post. The resulting corner led to a scramble for the ball in the Eagles goal area before the ball was hooked clear for another corner that was eventually cleared.

In the final minutes of the game a low shot by Eagles from the edge of the Royston penalty area flashed just wide of goal, and a couple of minutes before the end of the game Royston completed the scoring  with a shot from outside the left side of the penalty area  which went across Seymour and into the far  side of the net. In the last minute of the game an Eagles free kick went wide of goal to bring an end to the contest.
