MATCH REPORT SAT 1 AUGUST 2026

LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 2  61 FC 0

Eagles dominated most of the game against their lower league opponents from Luton but struggled to turn their play into goals until just before the half time interval and final whistle.

Eagles first threat on goal came as early as the 3rd minute with a break down the centre but the final shot by Eagles no 9 was deflected wide of goal by a covering defender. After 15 minutes a cross from the right side into the visitors penalty area was headed just wide of goal from near the penalty spot, and a few minutes later Eagles attacked down the left side but sent the shot  from outside the penalty area well wide of goal.

Eagles thought they had scored after 24 minutes after a bad mistake by the keeper who dashed out of his penalty area to try and intercept the ball on the touchline, but failed, and the ball was passed into the open goal. It was ruled out by the referee because of a foul on the keeper as he tried to put the ball out of play.

61 FC seldom threatened Eagles goal but a shot from about 30 yards distance sailed just over Eagles cross bar after 39 minutes, and 5 minutes later they nearly scored after a break downfield  led to a forward outpacing Eagles defenders and forcing the Eagles keeper to make a good save to stop the shot at his near post. The 61 keeper then did well to save a low shot from inside the penalty area. Almost on the stroke of half time Eagles finally got the goal they deserved. A free kick from the touchline was floated into the visiting penalty area and defenders failed to clear the ball. A shot hit the underside of the cross bar and came back into play and poked into the goal by Olly Humphreyes.

The action was nearly repeated soon into the second half. An Eagles corner was sent to the far post and weakly headed out by a defender. An Eagles forward got to the ball first and his shot hit the underside of the cross bar before rebounding into the arms of the keeper.

Eagles continued to threaten another goal which continued to allude them. A high cross was headed wide from the edge of the goal area and then after a rapid move downfield a low cross into the 61 penalty area was pushed over his own cross bar by a defender. The corner was then headed out of play for another corner before the ball finally went out of play for a goal kick

61 FC created few chances but a cross into Eagles penalty area produced a low shot on target from inside the penalty area which Eagles keeper did well to push wide. Minutes later play switched to the other end and it was the turn of the 61 FC keeper to make a great reflex save to push wide a strong shot by Shay Kelly from the edge of the penalty which took a deflection off a defender.  In the final action of the game Eagles gained a free kick a yard outside the opposition penalty area. The daisy cutter kick was well saved by the keeper to push the ball wide of his goal, but the resulting corner was headed into the roof of the net by Marcos Barrie.
