Eagles fielded a team largely made up of triallists and dominated much of the game, but 2 excellent strikes late in the game gave the home side an unlikely victory in a largely uninspiring match.
Eagles attacked from the start and a shot from the edge of the Buntingford penalty area went over the cross bar after barely 3 minutes play. After 12 minutes play a poor Buntingford back pass was intercepted by an Eagles forward whose low shot from the edge of the penalty area was saved by the keeper. Minutes later another poor pass by Buntingford inside their own half led to a race into their penalty area, but the Eagles forward carried the ball too far and it was collected by the keeper at his near post. At the half hour mark Buntingford conceded a free kick at the edge of their penalty area but although the kick went round the defensive wall it was too close to the keeper, who made a comfortable save. Eagles then won possession near half way and charged towards the home goal, outpacing defenders, but the final shot from the edge of the area was well saved by the keeper.
Eagles kept up pressure on the opposition goal early in the second half with another race downfield outpacing defenders but were unable to force the low cross into the net at the far post. Subsequent shots by both sides went wide of goal until after 72 minutes Buntingford broke the goal famine with a fierce shot into the top corner of the net from just inside Eagles penalty area.
As Eagles threw players forward they became at risk from a swift counterattack. In a race from half way towards Eagles goal a Buntingford forward, with only the keeper to beat, shot from the edge of the area forcing the Eagles keeper to make a fingertip save to push the ball wide of goal for a corner.
In the very last minute of the game Buntingford scored a spectacular second goal. Eagles defence was exposed caught upfield, and 2 Buntingford forwards sped into the away half finishing with a superb half volley from the edge of the area into the top corner of net.
