Buckingham FC

MATCH REPORT SAT 6 SEPTEMBER 2025

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1

BUCKINGHAM 0 LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 1

Despite missing several key players Eagles got an early goal and managed to hang on to it for the rest of the game, despite Buckingham having the most attempts on goal in the second half.

They went ahead after just 11 minutes when a long throw into the Buckingham penalty was headed on by a defender to an unmarked Charlie Austin, who scored with a fierce shot into the top corner of the net.

A minute later Buckingham almost got an equaliser when a long ball was played downfield by Buckingham. Keeper Coomes was slow to intercept and the ball was placed a yard wide of an empty goal by the onrushing Buckingham forward. An inswinging corner was then headed wide of the Eagles goal from a few yards out at the far post. Eagles were lucky not to concede a goal after 27 minutes when a low cross from the goal line found a Buckingham forward a few yards from goal at the near post, but he directed the ball straight at Coomes.

At the other end a shot from inside the penalty area was diverted just over the Buckingham cross bar by a defender, and next minute the keeper had to make a good save to tip a long range effort just over his cross bar. Almost on half time Eagles again threatened the Buckingham goal, but a low shot from a tight angle inside the penalty area was blocked by a defender at the near post, and after a frantic scramble in the goal area the ball was finally cleared upfield.

Shortly after half time Buckingham fired wide of goal from the edge of the penalty area and minutes later Coomes made a good save at the foot of his post from a low shot from outside the penalty area. Buckingham piled on the pressure in the second half and won a series of direct free kicks. Just after the hour mark Buckingham flighted a free kick from just inside their half into the Eagles penalty area, which Coomes failed to clear as he advanced from goal, and the ball passed just wide of goal. Another direct free kick into Eagles penalty area was not gathered by the keeper, the ball ran loose and finally was blasted high and wide of goal.

As the game approached the final stages another direct free kick into the Eagles penalty area was skied high into the air by a defender and was headed towards the top corner of the net. Comes made a fine save to push the ball over the crossbar to safety. Then a long ball downfield caught Eagles defence too square and a low shot from a tight angle hit the corner of the near post and crossbar before bouncing back into play.

Just before the final whistle a shot from outside the penalty area sailed high over Eagles goal and victory was assured for the first time in a league game this season.
