MATCH REPORT SAT 23 AUGUST 2025

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1

LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 2 ROYSTON TOWN RES 3

Eagles went ahead within the first 5 minutes when the Royston keeper failed to gather a corner at the far post and flapped at the ball, leaving Ellis Coker to poke the ball into the net. Eagles then had another chance after 8 minutes when a long throw into the Royston penalty area was headed over the cross bar from near the penalty spot.

The lead did not last long, and Royston equalised after 16 minutes when a low cross into the Eagles penalty area was not cleared by defenders, and the ball was pushed into the net at the far post through a group of players. Not long after Eagles almost conceded a second when after a break by Royston down the right side the ball was fed into the penalty area to an unmarked forward. Faced with a clear sight of goal his first touch was poor, and keeper Sonny May was able to collect the ball.

On the half hour Royston created another good chance when a poor pass out from Eagles penalty area found a Royston player. The ball was played into the penalty area to an unmarked forward but facing an open goal from just outside the goal area he ballooned the ball high over the crossbar. Eagles counter attacked and minutes later   were close to a goal when a low cross was hit just wide of goal from the edge of the penalty area.

Eagles defensive frailties were once more exposed after 36 minutes when a long ball downfield by Royston led to a cross at the far post which May failed to collect, but the onrushing Royston forward failed to make contact a few yards from goal. Almost on the stroke of half time the Royston keeper was finally called to make a critical save when a low cross was well struck towards goal, but he managed to get down quickly and make a decent save.

It did not take long in the second half for Royston to get their second goal when a low cross into the Eagles penalty area was cleanly placed into the net giving May little chance of saving. Shortly after a high cross into the home penalty area was headed backwards by Austin Christie and was caught on his goal line under the cross bar by May.

Eagles were lucky not to concede on the hour mark when May failed to collect a Royston corner and the ball was headed towards goal from the edge of the goal area but rebounded back into play off the inside of the crossbar. They then survived a scramble in the penalty area before the ball could be cleared upfield, and on 75 minutes they equalised when a cross was headed into the net by George Evans. Joy lasted a matter of minutes when a shot from well outside Eagles penalty area found the net with May rooted to the spot.

Eagles tried to counter and a Kain Brown header was blocked by defender with a scramble in front of goal before the ball was cleared upfield. As the game entered the final minutes Evans had a good opportunity to score after a characteristic run down the right side and low cross into the penalty area by Will Blair, but he delayed the shot, and the ball was blocked by covering defenders. In added time Eagles last chance to equalise disappeared when a low shot from the edge of the Royston penalty area was deflected wide of goal for a corner, which came to nothing.
