MATCH REPORT SAT 30 AUGUST 2025

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIV 1

LETCHWORTH GC EAGLES 2 RUSHDEN AND HIGHAM 3

Eagles’ dismal run of results continued with another home defeat, despite some fine saves by debutant keeper George Coomes.

Rushden were first to open the scoring in less than 10 minutes. A freekick from half way was floated into Eagles penalty area, flicked on and then a powerful header found the back of Eagles net. Rushden nearly added another 5 minutes later following a break down the centre of the field, but the final shot from inside the penalty area flew high over Eagles crossbar.

A few minutes later it was Eagles turn to score. The ball was played into Will Blair in the centre of the Rushden half and he moved the ball to the right side to be collected by Rory Gillham. He raced forward and directed an angled shot into the far top corner of the net from inside the penalty area. Eagles had another chance to score after 26 minutes when a shot from the edge of the penalty area was just wide of goal.

Play switched to the other end and Eagles new keeper George Coomes made a good save to push wide a shot from inside the penalty area. On the half hour it was Eagles turn to threaten a goal but a cross into the Rushden penalty area from the right side was driven just wide of goal

Just before half time Eagles keeper had to make 2 excellent saves. The first was with his feet after a defender miskicked in the penalty area presenting the ball to a Rushden forward with clear sight of goal. Minutes later Coomes had to get down low and stretch to push a shot from inside the penalty area over the crossbar. The subsequent corner was headed wide of goal.

Rushden almost scored a few minutes after the start of the second half when a long ball downfield put their striker clear on goal, but Coomes made a fine save to block the low shot with his feet. He was called into action less than 10 minutes later when Eagles conceded a direct free kick close to the edge of their penalty area. The ball was played into the area near his far post and he blocked the close range shot with his feet once more. Eagles were then lucky not to concede when a shot from outside their penalty area took a wicked deflection on to the inside of the crossbar before the ball bounced back into play.

Eagles tried a couple of long shots which went over the crossbar or wide of goal without troubling the Rushden keeper as they struggled to get out of their half. Their resistance was finally broken when a cross was played into the Eagles penalty area. Unaware of a Rusden player behind him Gillham attempted to clear the ball but only succeeded in bringing down his opponent. The penalty sent the keeper the wrong way and Eagles were again a goal behind. It could have been worse as the game entered its final stages when Coomes had to show strong hands to push arising shot over the crossbar. Eagles keeper was soon in action again to stop another shot from inside the penalty area before the ball was cleared upfield . A couple of minutes later Rushden did get a third goal when a long throw found a Rushden forward near the penalty spot, and he crashed the ball into the roof of Eagles net off the inside of the crossbar.

In added time the Rushden keeper was finally called into action to push a low shot from the edge of the penalty area wide of goal but in the final minutes Eagles did get another goal when Gillham took advantage of a scramble for the ball in the Rushden goal area to  place a low shot into the far corner of the net, but it was too little too late to save the game.
